Ethical Swimwear: The Search is Over!

On the journey to intentionally switch our entire wardrobes to ethically made pieces, swimwear has been one of the most inspiring items to look for. Not only are our favourite ethical swimwear brands intentional about ethical production, they are also starting to go out of their way to be inclusive with their styles and sizing while ensuring the pieces are versatile for all kinds of water loving activities. We've found 7 ethical swimwear brands that are making us swoon, discover them below!  

Minnow Bathers

Minnow Bathers is a collection of swimwear with both classic and eclectic patterns handmade to order in their Toronto-based studio. If you are unsure of your size you can send them your measurements and they will assist you in choosing the perfect size! A portion of each sale is donated to the Ocean Conservancy in support of healthy oceans. We have to admit we don't think the models Minnow Bathers chooses represent inclusive sizing, but from personal experience we know they are great at creating swimsuits to fit any size

Nettle's Tale

Based in Vancouver, Nettle's Tale is a body-positive swimwear line inspired by women of the Pacific Northwest. Their swimsuits are ethically made in Vancouver and consciously styled to celebrate any body type and enjoy any activity.  As with most ethical brands, if you're feeling unsure about the size of swimsuit you should buy, send them an email to get some support!

The Nettle's Tale website says it well: "wear what you want for your body, age, and style. These mix-and-match swimsuits are made for surfing, tanning, kayaking, and running after your kids. They love six-packs, stretch marks, pears, petites, and plentiful busts."

Fortnight

Fortnight's made in Toronto swimwear is carefully crafted to uphold quality and precision in every piece. Their minimalist and timeless designs are created to be long lasting and high performance with a focus on comfort and durability.

Mimi & August

A Montreal-based brand offering both swimsuits and apparel. Their elegant styles and completely adorable patterns are easy to wear and created to suit people of all ages, shapes and colours. The pieces are made in Montreal by skilled workers in small factories that enable economic development and sustainable job creation.  They use digital printing for their patterns, a much more eco-friendly option compared to dyes. 

Jessica Rey

Inspired by Audrey Hepburn, Rey Swimwear brings together contemporary fashion with vintage glamour. They value making a woman feel her femininity and grace in a bathing suit that offers class and beauty. The company manufactures and sources ethically in the USA, prioritizing dignity for all people involved in the manufacture of their product. Their suits are made from yarn that is 100% regenerated from pre and post consumer waste to reduce their environmental impact. 

Patagonia

Patagonia is absolutely top notch for high quality performance outdoor wear and outstanding ethics. They have a large variety of women's swimwearkids swimwear and men's board shorts. You can also find neoprene items and wetsuits for more active or chilly water pursuits.

Azura Bay is a Winnipeg-based online shop features a curated collection of luxurious and consciously made swimwear. The swimwear collections that they carry are ethically made in the USA and India from eco fabrics in low energy factories. They also donate a portion of each order to one of three organizations you can choose upon checking out.
